Part of the surgeonfish family, these tang fish display their prominent yellow color during the day, while at night, the yellow begins to fade and a distinctive brown and white patch appears.

The general habitat of the yellow tangs or Zebrasoma flavescens is in shallow reef areas in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, particularly around Hawaii and Japan. These fish are also very popular with aquarium enthusiasts; they only grow to about 8 inches.

They have a protruding snout type of mouth, and a thin, oval shaped body. Yellow tangs like to feed on seaweed and algae.
