The hunt for a Civil War Submarine in the greater Philadelphia AreaOn and off for the last 20 years, I have been assisting a team of volunteers looking for a Civil War submarine dubbed Alligator Jr, a pre-production model of the US Navy’s early submersible Alligator. The submersible Alligator was built in 1861 and lost off the Cape Hatteras in 1863. The search for this historic vessel has been fruitless, and the search area is impossibly large.However, Alligator Junior was last seen being demonstrated in the Delaware River near Philadelphia. The volunteer team has narrowed the search area to a creek surrounded by inaccessible marsh. The only practical way to locate the remains of this historic vessel is by using an aerial drone towing a magnetometer. Unfortunately, these assets are few and far between.
